The Glaven Valley economy enjoys an early season boost each year when its professional artists open up their studios to visitors. Each year, some 3,000 people and rising come for the specific purpose of visiting artists in their studios. They select the studios they want to visit from the catalogue published by the Norfolk Festival, and a flyer created by the artists themselves; both are available from venues across the valley.
The economy-boosting visitors often come far distances - visitor books sometime have Japanese signatures and American accents are often heard, outnumbering white-crowned sparrows from the same place.
They come to see a wide range of good art: beautiful drawings, exquisite watercolours, perceptive lino prints, etchings and huge wild oil paintings. Every medium can be seen , illustrating all sorts of subject matter.
They come to discuss with the artists the methods, materials, styles and intentions behind the work and so make full use of the rare opportunity to venture into the places where the art is made, and meet the people who make it. And often they buy something.
Local people are equally welcome into the studios. You may be surprised to see what your neighbours get up to. The event runs from May 17th to June 1st, so look out for the leaflets and signs.
