Carol Service
Thank you to everyone who made the carol service on 20th December such a wonderful start to Christmas. The Shining Stars, as ever, shone brightly – as did the church with all the candelabras lit. There is always much work which goes on behind the scenes for such occasions and I would like to say a huge thank you to all those who willingly gave of their time to make the service possible. From costume makers and singers to church decorators (the church looked an absolute picture) and refreshment providers. The Shining Stars treated everyone to a lovely depiction of the Nativity, and seeing the church full and with such an air of joyous excitement was the perfect start to Christmas – focusing on what the season is really all about. I am delighted to say that a sum of approximately £150 was raised for the charity Nelson's Journey which helps bereaved children.
Benefice Service
The Benefice service at Letheringsett last month coincided with the celebration of Epiphany. So, there was a reflection on the nature of kingship. "Epiphany" comes from the Greek word Epiphania, and means "to show, make known, or reveal." At Epiphany, the focus is on the visit of the Wise Men and the significance behind their visit is the revelation of Christ as "Lord and King." Perhaps not the world's perception of a king? In fact, on a light note, we were treated to some photographs of people who have been given the title 'king'. There was the King of Football (Eric Cantona), the King of the Silver Screen (Clark Gable) and, of course, the King of Rock and Roll (Elvis Presley! Whose birthday, incidentally, it would have been on the day of the service – 8th January). How very different is our King. The Lord, Creator come to us as a vulnerable child. His kingdom is without end, and Neil's encouragement to all of us was to reflect afresh on his rule in our lives. There were so many people in the church, which was wonderful to see. Parking became slightly problematic so could I please make a request for future services? We will ensure that there is ample parking for everyone but Church Lane must remain passable since it is the access road for Letheringsett Hall. Thank you.
The next Benefice service at Letheringsett will be March 11th.
Annual Parochial Church Meeting
The above meeting will take place at the Village Hall at 4.30pm on Thursday 29* March. St Andrew's Church is part of our community and wants to respond to the wishes and needs of the community. So, if you have any comments or suggestions for the Parochial Church Council, please do come along to the meeting. Everyone is welcome.
Valentine's Day!
As at this time last year, with Valentine's Day around the corner, I have been thinking about it being a day to celebrate what it means to love and to be loved. Here are a few quotations I found.
Love is best. Robert Browning
Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead
Oscar Wilde
Love is feeling comfortable and safe with someone, but still getting weak knees when they walk into a room and smile at you.
