Letheringsett Parish Council

Vacancies on Letheringsett and Glandford Parish Council
Two of the existing Councillors have left the Council which means it is down to five members. Technically, that is enough to allow business to carry on, but, in fact, it leaves the Council urgently in need of new arrivals. The council has the power to co-opt new members to serve until the election of a full Council next year, and a formal notice to that effect has gone up on the notice-board near the (practically derelict) phone box in Letheringsett.

Although I write these reports, I cannot myself serve on the Council for various personal reasons, but I can appeal to two public-spirited individuals in the parish to take this on. The Parish Council has to reach more decisions than you might think, particularly about the preservation and upkeep of the beautiful surroundings in which we are so lucky to live, but they won't stay beautiful for long unless local people are prepared to devote a little bit of their time to some public service. Anyone interested in fording out more should contact Louise Stevens, the Parish Clerk, on 711596 as soon as possible.

Letheringsett Village Hall
We've just got used to summer, but nevertheless, I am now asking you to get out your autumn and winter diaries to make a note of what we've got planned for the rest of the year.

The next event will be held at 7.30 p.m. on Friday September 3rd and will be another in our series of 'An Evening with ...' Our guest this time will be Carol Bundock, who for many years now has been the popular presenter of the BBC's 'Look East' and other local TV programmes, and she and I will be exchanging some thoughts on her long experience of broadcast journalism in this part of the world, as well as her work with local charities. Tickets are priced at £7.50 to include a glass of wine or a soft drink, and will be available from Monday August 2nd by calling me on 713732.

The Harvest Supper will be held on Saturday October starting at 7 p.m. This is always a popular event and will follow the usual format of a meal, with wine included in the ticket price of £10 per person. Tickets will be available from early September by calling either Gwen Luker on 712897 or Andree Shepherd on 713370.
This is an early notice, too, of a couple of other events. During the autumn half-term week, there will be an afternoon event for both parents and children, which we are calling 'Meet the Band'. We are so lucky that we have a lot of musicians in this part of the world who play a whole variety of instruments – not just the piano, but things like the clarinet and the drums, and even the ukulele. So we thought we'd ask some of them along at 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday 27th October so that you can meet them, hear them and ask them questions about why they like playing what they do, and perhaps whether you could do it, too.

We might have a bit of a sing-song as well. Entry, at £5.00 for a family of four, will be available on the door.
Finally, there will be a Christmas Coffee Morning and Cake & Bake sale on the morning of Saturday December 11th. In addition, we are hoping to arrange a Christmas Concert at around the same time, designed as a musical celebration for the whole village – not just carols, but some of the other seasonal favourites too. More details about both those events later.

Fun & Gift Day

As mentioned in last month's newsletter, we will be having our Dad's Army themed Fun & Gift Day on Saturday 1 September between 2pm and 4pm. Proceedings will start in the church at 2pm. We are planning to have a display of memorabilia in church so, if you have any items and old photographs you would be happy to lend for the day, I would love to hear from you. Please call round (The Old Rectory) or telephone (712722). There will be stalls outside the church and, as last year, Neil will be providing delicious refreshments. Come along. There will be many people dressed in character so feel free to come along in your best outfits!

If at all possible, I am hoping to persuade personnel from the Light Dragoons Regiment to join us. You may recall the Tank episode last November. The photographs of the moment when the tank came through our fence generated a sum of money which we wish to donate to Help for Heroes. It would be wonderful to be able to present the cheque on the occasion of our Gift Day.

Benefice Service & Harvest Festival
The next Benefice Service at St Andrew's will be on Sunday 12th September which will also be our Harvest Festival Service. As usual, for anyone wanting to join the choir for the service, there will be a practice from 9.20am.

Choral Evensong
Thank you to everyone involved in the wonderful Choral Evensong on 27th June. It was a delight to have a large choir, including our friends from Mildenhall once again. Special thanks to Juliet who devotes a lot of time and energy in bringing these uplifting services together.
