The Bale & Stiffkey Benefice

FIELD DALLING

This village of approximately 250 people, lies 4 miles inland. Field Dalling ChurchIt is at the heart of the benefice, surrounded by beautiful countryside. The village was once a farming community, and still is to an extent, although its pubs, school and shops have closed. Villagers shop in Holt. Children attend schools in Langham and at Greshams, and the nearest pubs are in Langham and Binham.

About a quarter of the houses are second homes. Full time and part time residents take part in village events and share an interest in its future. One third of Field Dalling’s residents were born and raised here, and the rest have come to live here. There are three farms in the village. Some residents work from home. The village shares a parish council with nearby Saxlingham. The council is negotiating with the district council to secure affordable homes in the village. It is also considering producing a village plan and website. The two villages also share a village hall in Field Dalling, which is a focal point for the two communities. It is well kept and has a lively and positive committee. Carpet bowls and Friends and Neighbours are the two currently thriving clubs. A traditional annual village fete is enjoyable, brings everyone together, and raises £2,000 for the two village churches and the village hall.

Field Dalling at Christmas

Field Dalling also shares services with Saxlingham, two Sundays each month at each church. Current arrangements, in response to local demand, have a lay led family service and a BCP matins, priest led if possible, each month at St. Andrews while Communion is celebrated only at Saxlingham. This arrangement may well be reviewed. The successful and enjoyable monthly family service has drawn children and families into the church. The small but energetic PCC tries to reach out to the village. In return there is local support for the care of the fabric especially when “only the church will do” for funerals and festivals.
