Field
Dalling is three miles inland from the North Norfolk coast
at Morston. The nearest town, Holt, is five miles away and
Norwich
twenty-five. The area is almost entirely arable land in full
agricultural use although there is very little employment on
the land. The population of the village is about 250, with 223
on the electoral roll, and includes a mix of working families,
the retired both local and from outside, a number of second
homes which are occupied mostly at weekends and a small number
of holiday
homes to let. A small number of people work from home via the
Internet.Like many country villages Field Dalling now has no
school, shop, post office or pub, though these amenities are
available in neighbouring villages. There is a well equipped
village Hall which is active as a social centre. Community
events include a Christmas Concert and a Harvest Supper. The
annual fete is shared with the Village hall Committee and the
neighbouring parish of Saxlingham. Other special fund-raising
events are planned for 2004.
The church dates from the thirteenth century, is one of the
larger churches in the group and is in a fair state of repair.
There are no critical problems with the fabric but a great deal
of maintenance work to be done, the annual cost of which usually
exceeds the restoration income. The church was recently rewired.
The churchyard is well maintained, thanks to a good deal of willing
voluntary help.
The church finances are closely controlled and the Parish Share
has so far been fully paid every year, despite steep annual increases.
There is a General Fund for all non-maintenance expenses, sourced
by collections and donations, and a Maintenance Fund for repair
and improvement work. The latter receives direct donations and
is boosted by the proceeds of events organised by SARA., the
St. Andrew's Restoration Association,
