Gunthorpe
is a small rural village surrounded by farmland. Farming is
the main industry, the land being owned by Barton Bendish Farms
who
also own several houses in the village. Apart from Gunthorpe
Hall that is used for Conferences and Weddings, there is no
other commercial activity within the village.
There is a variety of housing - farmhouses, private dwellings
(old and new) several holiday houses and a few council-owned
properties. A village hall hosts several activities throughout
the year.
A community bus serves several local villages and transports
inhabitants to and from Fakenham, Holt and Norwich.
Organizations in Gunthorpe include: Friends of Gunthorpe Church,
50-50 Club, Women’s Institute Gunthorpe and Swanton Novers
branch, Gunthorpe and Bale Parish Council and an excellent Annual
Village fete proceeds being shared between the Institute and
the Church.
Pevsner p 532 St Mary's Church (circa 1300) stands at the top
of a hill half a mile north of the village. It is conscientiously
and reasonably well maintained. This has been ongoing for a
number of years and has included major projects. |
